10 Fun Things to do in the UK on the Weekend for £0!
Studying abroad can be get expensive, but don't get discouraged. Here is a list of 10 things you can do on the weekend as an international student in the UK for absolutely free!
1. Go for a walk
Hey, you're studying in a new country, so
there's a lot to see. Just touring your neighbourhood for a
couple of hours will get you a great sense of the culture and
community life that surrounds you. The UK is full of lovely parks
and gardens everywhere, as well as some fascinating old buildings
and monuments, and the climate is almost always fit for a nice
walk outdoors. Plus, it's good exercise! So put on your walking
shoes, grab a friend if you want, and start walking to wherever
your feet lead you.
2. Meet New People!
Some folks always complain that they're lonely and don't know
anyone. Well if that's the case, set a goal for yourself to find
5 new friends this weekend! There are people everywhere, really.
Talk to some neighbours you don't know very well, or go to places
like the local shopping mall and try to chat with a few people
you meet. And if you're a shy person, talk to the current friends
you met in class and ask them to introduce you to knew people.
The UK is full of nice, friendly and polite people waiting to get
to know you!
3. Play some
football/rugby/cricket!
Sports are a great way to have fun and stay in shape! Grab some
friends or just go to a local field and try joining a game. If
you're not familiar with the rules, it's a great opportunity to
learn. Brits love football (soccer), rugby and cricket, but you
can always find tennis field, a badminton courts, or basketball
hoops. Whatever sport you're into, you can probably find the
place to do it in the UK.
4. Go to your local
library!
Local libraries are great! They often have free registration for
students, or at least discounts. Pick up a book and read it! And
you'll find a lot more than books in a library- CDs, DVDs,
magazines… you can find enough things to read, listen to and
watch for many more weekends to come. And this will be a great
opportunity to improve your English by reading, so that's a great
bonus.
5. Clean your place
up!
Don't whine- you know there's something that needs cleaning
around. Take a weekend to vacuum the carpets, wash the floor, and
wipe dust off of everything. It can actually be fun if you make a
game of it or put some music on while you're at it. You can even
invite friends to a cleaning party, and then help them clean
their place as well. And when your room smells lemony-fresh,
you'll feel a lot better!
6. Contact home!
Studying abroad, everyone gets homesick every now and again. It's
important to call your family and friends back in your home
country. You may be able to do this for free using Internet
programs like Skype, and if not you can always use emails and
instant chats. Let your family and old friends know you miss them
even though you're far away.
7. Find an opportunity to
volunteer!
The UK, like any other place, has a lot of fulfilling volunteer
experience opportunities lined up. You can help out at a local
community centre or library, or even organize your own little
fundraiser (bake sale?) with your friends. You won't only be
helping the less fortunate, but you'll have something great to
put on your resume and future applications. Help the world and
help yourself!
8. Take some "you"
time!
Studying abroad isn't easy, and you can get tired from all the
work. The weekend is a great time to just relax. Take a nice warm
bath, or just stay in bed for a few extra hours. Put some
relaxing music on, unplug the phone and dim the lights- it's
chill time. "You" time will help you re-energize and get ready
for the week ahead.
9. Learn something
new!
Studying abroad doesn't mean you can only learn things in class.
You can always learn something new, and if you're already in the
UK how about learning something British? Discover British
history, geography, and culture first hand! Learn more about the
English Premier Football League, or British rock music, or
whatever else interests you. And make sure to tour LearnHub for communities with lessons
about anything you can imagine, from knitting to comic books.
10. Study!
Well, that's what you came to the UK for. Do some homework, get
ahead in your readings, and finish the project that's due next
week. Studying gets a lot of fun when you're doing it with
friends and discuss the potion of the material that really
interests you! If you study every weekend, you'll get great
marks, and your studies will really pay off. It's always a good
idea!
And these are just a few ideas! The UK has a lot to offer for little or no cash, it's just a matter of looking around for fun things to do. So get off of your chair, and go have some fun!
