The UK bred some of the best people in the world in terms of… well, everything! Scientists like Newton, politicians like Churchill, actors like Hugh Laurie, economists like Adam Smith, naturalists like Darwin, musicians like David Bowie, and so many other great people!

Hmmm, since Keira Knightley is in that picture, I just might have to say her!

    ;)

Otherwise, and slightly more seriously, I’d have to go with William Shakespeare.

I absolutely agree about the Shakespeare points… and I never I’d live to see Shakespeare and the Spice Girls in the same discussion before!

You may interested in checking out the list of 100 Greatest Britons.

Shakespeare scored 5th place, right behind Charles Darwin and before Isaac Newton. Bono is in number 86, with J.K. Rowling at 83, William Wallace at 48, Henry VIII at 40, and David Bowie (woohoo) at 29. Winston Churchill tops the list at #1.

What does everyone think of the list?

And on that topic, check out the 100 Worst Britons.

Note Mick Jagger at 83, Sting at 81, Harry Potter at 35, and Simon Cowell at 33. Topping the list are Jordan (Katie Price) and Tony Blair…

    I don’t agree that J.K Rowling is a greater brit than J.R.R Tolkien… that’s blasphemy!

I have to say, I never heard of Isambard Kingdom Brunel before I stumbled on this list. However, I do agree with Churchill being at 1 though, for all the obvious reasons.

In terms of worst Britons, I disagree with Jamie Oliver at #28 (he’s a good guy, fighting for good food for pupils in school), Harry Potter (He’s not even real! And he’s cool), and of course Mick Jagger and Elton John shouldn’t be there at all.

I think it’s pretty impossible to just compile a top Britons list without any other criteria which is why we have such a crazy mix of people here. Does writing a book and making money outweigh another persons accomplishments in the field of medicine and science, or another’s accomplishments of the battlefield? It all depends on what you value most…..but I guess this list came from a vote of the citizens which should mean something.

All that said…I vote for Winston Churchill at #1 as well. I think the world could be a different place if not for some of his leadership and decisions in world war II.

I think best British …is Sherlock Holmes (in case of fictional people) .....do I need to introduce him more?

Also in case of Living and reality,I think Sir Issac Newton stands no challenge ..again..who can forget
    " DAVID BECKHAM " ?

Sherlock Holmes is pretty cool, he’s the original fictional detective character. And I do agree that Newton is one great Briton, his accomplishments in math and physics led to so many applications in science and engineering, it’s hard to imagine where humanity would stand without him.

And to be honest I’m not a huge fan of Beckham… he’s too much of a “pretty boy” to be a really amazing football player. But I know a lot of people disagree.

How can Sting be on the worst list…boo hoo hoo…

And how about Kate Winslet, she’s pretty awesome…

Seriously I think Churchill and Shakespeare top my list as well…closely followed by Lord Tennyson and Vanessa Redgrave…

And in the worst, the ‘first family of football’ the Beckhams…

By the way is Gordon Ramsey on the worst list?

Yeah, I support Agatha Christie. She was bigger than J.K. at her time, and wrote a ridiculous amount of books. And come on, Beckham did have a lot to do with the increased interest of football in North America, so he deserves something.

Sting is on the Worst list probably because of the personal scandals associated with his name then his music. His lyrics are usually pretty bad anyway (Every Step You Take is easily misinterpreted for a romantic song, it’s actually quite creepy).

And Gordon Ramsey is number 82., right before Sting. Here is the full list.
