What to Love about the UK (Discussion)

What is it that draws you to the UK?

Is there an aspect about the geography here that entices you, or is it the history and tradition of their schools? What have you heard about the UK and why is it creating so much buzz?

When I was considering working abroad (sorry not studying abroad), the only place that came to mind was the UK. From a Canadian’s perspective, as a child I was always drawn to the culture, the history architecture, and the people. The UK had one of the most popular and well-known history. London was unlike any city in Canada or the United States and it was almost like a medieval Disney Land. That day-dreaming stuck with me. I could see myself exploring all the old buildings, the landscape, and drinking the night away at the local pub with my mates.

Also, for a Canadian, it would a major culture experience but with some security. They speak English, and Canada and the US do pull some of their culture from the UK, so that would be familiar.

Plus, it would be pretty awesome to take on a Scottish Accent ;)

I totally agree with what Adam says (except for the Scottish accent part… and being from a Scottish family, I should know).

Aside of those points, I have another: The UK is part of the EU, so it opens up gates to an entire continent, plus it’s in English, the international language. It just opens up so many possibilities!

For me though, I’m personally most attracted by the weather. England has nice mild temperatures and weather that gets gloomy and sometimes rainy… just the way I like it!

I really should check out an exchange opportunity or something…

You can get that “gloomy” rain in British Columbia, Canada as well. The north-west coast of the United States (Washington) also has that kind of weather. Growing up on Vancouver Island we only get extreme heat for about 2 weeks of the summer. The rest of the time it is either clouds with rain or warm comfortable weather. And for those hot days, you just jump into ocean, river, or lakes! The winters don’t often drop below the freezing mark and rarely receive snow.

@Adam- I’ve heard that a lot about BC… my friend went to study there because she used to love rain and now she became a sun person, so I’m a bit scared of going there.

But anyway, another great reason to go study in the UK sometime in the next 4 years- the 2012 Olympics are coming to London! Of course, we’ll have the Beijing games very soon, but it’s important to look into the future…

The fact that The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Dire Straits and Eric Clapton are all from the UK!
